ESCUELAS PARA PADRES’ TOPICS

Escuela Para Padres’ workshop provides parents with the necessary skills to make their job as parents easier and also gives ideas about how to better fulfill their role. The curriculum provides practical suggestions on how to improve the communication with our kids and how to have a better relationship with them. It also offers sensible solutions to problems that are common to most parents. The workshop is made out of 9 classes in which we discuss topics such as:

1. “How we learned to be parents”- discusses the influence of our upbringing in the way we perceive our kids and our parenting role. Helps identify detrimental patterns.
2. “Parents but also People” - talks about the importance of perceiving our kids as persons that need our respect, attention and space and to also see ourselves as a whole person not only as a mom or dad.
3. “Self-esteem” - on this class we discuss ways of helping our kids to view themselves as valuable and important. Class promotes the development of a positive self-image. Also helps in the identification of basic feelings and the handling of emotions.
4. “Tenderness”- discusses how to express love and affection to our kids so they feel loved even before they are born.
5. “Discipline”- This topic establishes the importance of having clearly defined controls and the correct way to implement discipline in the kids without using physical or verbal violence. Promotes the idea of leading our kids to eventual self-regulation.
6. “Effective Communication” - discusses specific communication techniques such as the “I Message” and others that will enable the whole family to open the communication lines.
7. “Listening”- here we discuss different effective listening techniques such as “Active Listening” that improve the communication especially during the teen years.
8. “The family system” teaches cooperation among the family members and ways of viewing the family as a team in which every member is an important component with different roles and responsibilities working together for the same objectives.

The topics are prepared by a group of multidisciplinary well-trained presenters, including a Pediatrician, a Psychologist, a Health Educator and a Teacher. We include among our presenters parents of different ages and circumstances so that our participants can relate to them and to the experiences they share. The participation of the parents with their questions and ideas is encouraged. Supplemental reading material is provided.
